There were times when I barely finished praying and the answer was right there. And then there were times when I prayed and waited . . . and waited . . . and waited. In the early days of my walk with Jesus, I tried everything to ‘help’ God hurry up. That included fleeces—asking God to give me a sign so I’d know what to do. The problem is, I ended up feeling ‘fleeced’ as a result!
My husband and I had a major travel decision to make, and instead of waiting on the Lord’s voice, I dove into fleece territory. “Lord, if we’re supposed to do this, let the door open.” It opened. “Okay, God, if we’re still on track, make everything work out.” It did. So, we moved forward and made a pretty big financial investment. When asked if we wanted cancellation insurance for the travel portion, we confidently said, “No thanks!” After all, God had answered our fleeces—why would we need insurance?
Well, an unexpected situation came up and we lost every penny tied to that plan.
I cried out to the Lord, asking, “What happened? You answered the fleeces!” And in that quiet, unmistakable voice, He said, “Pam, they used fleeces in the Old Testament because they didn’t have the Holy Spirit. But you do. You’re not to be led by fleeces—you’re led by My Spirit.” Whew. Lesson learned.
Over the years, I’ve read all kinds of books on prayer—different styles, formats, and phrases. But God always gently brings me back to His truth: “I hear you. And you can hear Me, too.” Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (ESV).
It’s not about magic words. It’s not about mimicking someone else’s method. It’s about relationship. It’s about knowing who I’m talking to—my Father—and trusting that He hears me and will respond. So, pray. Talk to Him. But also be ready to wait for His response. Trust His timing. He knows the season and the moment for every answer we need. As Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven” (NKJV).
Now, waiting doesn’t mean doing nothing. If there’s an urgent situation and you need to move, move. But when you’re seeking guidance from God, patience is often part of the process. Don’t rush Him. Don’t panic. Don’t try to manufacture an answer just because you're tired of waiting.
Be faithful. Keep praying. Keep listening. Remind Him of His promises. But more than anything, stay in relationship. Prayer isn’t a formula. It’s not a transaction. It’s a conversation. And the Holy Spirit—your Helper—is ready to guide every word and every decision.
He wants to speak to me—and you. He loves being invited into our life choices. So let’s stop treating prayer like a task and start leaning into it like the heart-to-heart it was always meant to be.
